"Span Test Prep allowed me to increase my ACT score to a 34 and also my confidence while taking the test. I was able to increase in every section after the 6 weeks of tutoring."
Why is Span Test Prep better than other ACT/SAT prep courses?
Span Test Prep is the most efficient and effective prep course in the country, offering one-on-one sessions for the ACT/SAT that are customized to fit each student’s needs. Students will take full-length practice tests and individually meet with a tutor after each test, reviewing every mistake and developing a strategy that is unique to the student’s strengths and weaknesses. STP knows that students are incredibly busy, so it has created a program that can fit into any student’s schedule.
How many courses are there and how often do they meet?
Since Span Test Prep is customized for each student, courses can start and end at any time. Courses are generally planned with a specific ACT or SAT dates in mind so that students are prepared and confident at the perfect time. The typical student will sign up for one of the four courses - fall, winter, spring, or summer - but a build-your-own option is always available. Every course has 6 sessions, but students can finish those sessions as quickly or slowly as their schedule allows.
Does Span Test Prep offer classroom meetings to take the practice ACT/SATs?
Yes, Span Test Prep offers classroom meetings for students that want to take the full-length practice tests in an environment similar to the real ACT/SAT. These take place during different times of the year and are free for registered students.
Where do the classes meet?
There are many tutors, and they are able to meet in Chicago or just about any suburb.
We are currently developing an online form of the individual tutoring, which will be accessible for anyone with an Internet connection, so check back soon for those course offerings.
How much does the Span Test Prep course cost?
Sessions and pricing vary by tutor and location, so check the sessions and pricing page.
How do you prepare students who receive special accommodations for the ACT/SAT?
We always ask if students have accommodations, and we prepare the students with that in mind. For example, if a student gets time-and-a-half, we make sure to discuss the appropriate way to pace the test. Our goal is for every student to complete the test in the specific time allotted for that student.
Will this program help if my student is not a good test-taker?
Absolutely! Anyone can improve their score, no matter what their ability. Span Test Prep prepares the student at their own pace, allowing them to maximize their test-taking potential. In fact, since Span Test Prep develops a unique plan for every student, we are able to help any student, regardless of their baseline score or test-taking ability.
How many times can a student take the ACT or SAT?
As many times as they like, but most students take a test three or four times.
Should students also take the SAT?
It depends on the student. The SAT allows more time per question, so students who need more time to analyze the questions would be a better fit for the SAT. The SAT math has a calculator and a no calculator section, so it depends on how comfortable a student is doing math without his/her calculator.
Can my student use the new TI-Nspire on the ACT?
Yes, the TI-Nspire calculator is allowed, but the TI-Nspire CAS is prohibited. Many students still use the TI-83 or TI-84 calculator during the test, and those work fine as well. The SAT allows the use of any calculator, including the TI-Nspire CAS during the Math section that allows the use of a calculator. There is a section that prohibits the use of any calculator on the SAT.
Do you offer training for the calculators allowed on the ACT/SAT?
Yes, Span Test Prep offers comprehensive lessons on the TI-Nspire, TI-84, and TI-83.
What happens if we go away on vacation, or if a student has to miss a classroom meeting due to illness?
Classroom meetings are mainly to take practice tests, so the student should arrange to pick up the materials and take the missed tests at home. The tests should be completed before the next individual session. Individual meetings can easily be rescheduled if the student cancels 24-48 hours before the session.
Do colleges prefer whether you take the ACT or SAT?
No, colleges accept both tests equally, so it is up to the student to decide which test they are most comfortable taking.
Does Span Test Prep offer any other courses besides the 6-session course?
Yes, we also offer a “Refresher Course” for a reduced price, which is 3 additional meetings and 2 practice tests prior to an actual ACT/SAT test. This course still has the individualized, one-on-one sessions.
Does Span Test Prep offer preparation for the writing sections of the ACT/SAT?
Yes, we offer comprehensive preparation for both updated writing sections of the ACT and SAT, if the student decides to take the writing sections.
